PILSEN TO OPEN THE YEAR OF EUROPEAN CULTURE

On Saturday, 17th Capital of Culture 2015. The courtyard of the Pilsner Urquell brewery will host part of the rich program.

On Saturday 17th As part of the gala ceremony to open Pilsen as the European capital of culture for the year 2015, the brewery will introduce original brewing crafts and will invite those interested to tour the attractive visitor routes, which include beer tastings. A special brewery post office will be open where visitors will be able to send postcards free of charge to their friends in the Czech Republic and other countries, inviting them to visit the brewery.

Brewing crafts

From 11:00 a.m. on the festive day, visitors will be able to experience on the brewery courtyard the original brewing crafts which have been kept alive to date by the coopers. Our coopers are the only ones in Central Europe actively preserving such traditional work with oak barrels.

Tours of the brewery

Visitors can learn more about the traditional and unchanged production process of original Pilsner Urquell beer on our brewery tours, where a number of innovations have recently been introduced, which will be available throughout the day in several languages.

Pork feast, folklore music and the new circus

The accompanying program on the brewery courtyard and in a heated beer tent will include a Czech pork feast, while the atmosphere will be made complete with folklore music performed by a local folk band called Mladina (Wort). Other performers on the day will include the Péro za kloboukem Orchestra, the Studna Theatre, New Circus artists and Estela Fuego, a five-piece band from Pilsen.

Special brewery post office

A special brewery post office will, among other things, be open at the brewery. Visitors will be able to choose a postcard and invite their friends to visit Pilsen and have a beer, and enjoy the great cultural program. Plzeňský Prazdroj will send all invitations free of charge to recipients in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Parade

At 4 p.m., one of the four ceremonial parades which will go through the city in the afternoon, displaying the best of Pilsen’s attractions, will set off from U Prazdroje Street. The parade will be led by a horse-drawn carriage on which Václav Berka, our Senior Trade Brewmaster, will tap a 170-litre barrel of Pilsner Urquell from which he and other brewmasters will draw beer.
