The history of The Plzeňský Prazdroj a.s. Central Archive is complicated. It is the successor to the archives of the Burghers' Brewery in Pilsen and the First Joint Stock Brewery in Pilsen, which functioned until 1945. Inadequate attention was devoted to the archive's activities for the first ten years following the war. Only in 1956, at the behest of Ministry of the Interior Decree no. 153, was a company archive established by the then director of the West Bohemian Breweries National Enterprise. Its actual activity began in 1958. From that time onwards the archive has collected written documents not only of all Pilsen breweries but also of West Bohemian breweries which up to 1958 formed part of the Pilsen Breweries National Enterprise in Pilsen, and after that, until 1992, of the West Bohemian Breweries Holding in Pilsen. In recent years Plzeňský Prazdroj a.s documents have been deposited in the archive.
In 2009 a technical archive was added to the archive. This comprises technical documentation for all the buildings of today's Plzeňský Prazdroj a.s. The documentation extends to approximately 210 metres, with the oldest plans of buildings or machinery dating back to the 1880s.
The archive also includes an extensive record office. In this are deposited documents from the S category (chiefly accounting documents) from all of the company's departments. Documents ranging up to 6,500 metres are kept in two places – the building by the water tower and the "Kaiser" building.
One archivist (archive supervisor) is in charge of archiving activity – receiving documents, processing them, caring for their physical state and professional research. A single employee is responsible for managing the archive and records office. The Archive is integrated for purposes of organisation in the Tradition and Visits Department (T§H).
